A recent analysis by Third International Mathematics & Science Study (TIMSS) has brought into sharp focus the shortcomings in the contents and rigours of Science and Mathematics teaching in the primary and secondary school.

Moreover, India had not been participating in International Science Olympiads which fact could provide a much needed spur to effective teaching and learning. Although the inertia has been broken by the participation in the 39th International Olympiad - 1998, held in Taiwan, such events at the national level could provide a real impetus to better assessment and exploitation of the potential of our students.

The SOF ended the status quo by constituting the annual National Science Olympiad.
The First National Science Olympiad: The First National Science Olympiad was held in January 1999 and more than 500 schools spread over the country participated in the event.

The Second National Science Olympiad: Held in January 2000. More than 1500 schools participated in this Olympiad.

The Third National Science Olympiad: Held in January 2001 the event received an overwhelming response. More than 1700 schools participated in the only Indian Olympiad of International Standard. Participants came from India and Indian schools in Gulf.

The Fourth National Science Olympiad: The Olympiad received maximum registrations around 1 lakh students registered from approximately 1500 schools.

The Fifth National Science Olympiad: Held in January 2003 the event received an overwhelming response. More than 1900 schools participated in the event.

The Sixth National Science Olympiad: This Olympiad held in December 2003 saw a record participation of approximately 1.5 lakh students from about 1600 schools.

The Seventh National Science Olympiad: This Olympiad held in December 2004 saw a record participation of approximately 1.8 lakh students.

The Eighth National Science Olympiad: This Olympiad held in November 2005 saw a record participation of approximately 2.3 lakh students.
